SEASON: 2021-22
DIVISION: Football League Championship (Tier 2)
WHAT HAPPENED
We started 2021-22 with four league losses, exactly like we did last season. Before that, the previous time we lost the first four league games of the season was in 1954-55, when we lost the first five games (but still finished in 15th place and avoided relegation). So 2021 was our worst start to the season in 67 years. And then Steve Cooper joined.
Well, technically we fired Chris Hughton first. And then we asked first team coach Steven Reid to take over as caretaker manager, after only being at Forest for month. And then Derby were deducted 12 points for entering administration, to take us off the bottom of the league. But I digress, because then Steve Cooper joined.
We started great under the new manager with a draw and four wins before his first loss at champions-to-be Fulham. Then came an unbeaten streak of 9 games to lift us up to 7th place.
The FA Cup provided a lot of excitement as, after knocking out Arsenal in the 3rd Round, holders Leicester in the 4th Round and then Huddersfield Town in the 5th round we got the best tie possible for the Quarter Final. We were drawn at home to Liverpool, giving us our biggest home game for 20 years and, although we lost 1-0, we still played a tremendous game and Liverpool went on to win the trophy.
Back in the league, we briefly occupied a playoff spot for one game after beating Blackburn 2-0 away and then hovered just below it until we ended a 10-game unbeaten run in 3rd place and we stayed in the playoff zone until finally finishing 4th on the last day of the season. We met Sheffield United in the playoff semi finals and beat them on penalties in the second leg, before beating Huddersfield Town in the Playoff final at Wembley. That meant that after being bottom after 8 games, we had somehow made the Quarter Final of the FA Cup and are in the Premier League. Well not just somehow. Steve Cooper joined.
