Date Title Details
January 1Des Walker scored his only goal for usDes Walker scored his only goal for us on New Year's Day, 1992, at the end of the home game against Luton Town. We were a goal down after just 43 seconds and it reamined that way until the 90th minute when Des got the ball in the Luton half and went to the edge of the area before unleashing a shot that most keepers would have a problem stopping. The goalkeeper who let it in that day? None other than Steve Sutton who was on loan to Luton from us!
January 6Brian Clough becomes managerOn January 6th 1975 Brian Clough became our manager. Within 5 years we were champions of England, Europe, held two League Cups and a new record of 42 unbeaten games. The greatest manager ever.
January 17Our record Victory: 14-0Jan 17th was the date of our record victory in 1891. We beat Clapton 14-0 (away!) in the first round of the FA Cup, including five goals from Alex Higgins and four from Tinsley Lindley
January 19Two games abandoned on Jan 19thWe've had two games abandoned on January 19th. The first was a league game away at Bury in 1901. With the score at 1-1, heavy rain caused the game to be stopped just before half time. We won the rescheduled game 1-0. Then in 1918 during a Wartime fixture away at Bradford Park Avenue we were losing 2-0 when fog caused the game to be halted. We didn't get much luck out of it...we lost the replayed game 3-0.
February 5We won the European Super CupOn this day in 1980 we won the European Super Cup. It was the second leg of a two-leg final against none other than Barcelona. After a 1-0 win the first leg at the City Ground (where Charlie George scored his only Forest goal) we held on for 1-1 draw at the Nou Camp to become Super Cup winners of Europe.
February 18We played a team from every UK country in the FA CupOn this day in 1922 we lost an FA Cup tie 4-1 away at Cardiff City. The defeat wasn't significant, but a game against a Welsh club meant that we had now played an FA Cup game against teams from England, Scotland (Queens Park), Northern Ireland (Linfield) and now Wales, and are still the only club that have managed that feat.
February 22John McGovern debutFormer captain John McGovern made the first of his 335 games for Forest in a 0-0 draw at home to Cardiff City
February 24Trevor Francis debutShortly after becoming the first 1 Million pound footballer, Trevor Francis made his debut at home to Bristol City in a 2-0 win. Although playing only 93 games in four seasons for Forest, he won over half of them and scored the only goal in our first European Cup win in 1980.
March 3Gary Crosby heads out of Dibble's handsDuring a game against Manchester City, Gary Crosby scored one of the most controversial goals when he headed the ball out of City keeper Andy Dibble's hands and tapped it in the net. The goal was disputed, but given, and we won the game 1-0.
March 5Our first Red Card!Back on March 5, 1910, we had our first sending off! During a home game against Chelsea, both George Needham and Windridge (for Chelsea) got their marching orders. This is the first red card for a Forest player that I know of.

April 28Relegated for the first timeAfter 14 seasons in the top flight, we were relegated on this day in 1906 for the first time in our history. We were safe before the start of play with a 1 point lead over Bury and Middlesbrough, but our 4-1 loss at Everton combined with a win for Bury and a draw for 'Boro draw meant we were relegated on Goal Average. May 1Cloughie's last home gameEmotional scenes at the City Ground on this day in 1993 as Brian Clough managed his last home game. He had announced his retirement a few weeks earlier but, as fate would transpire, we were also in the relegation zone prior to this game and the 0-2 loss meant we were relegated. Not that it mattered to the Forest fans, although the tributes were lead a few minutes before full time from the away end. The Sheffield United fans started singing Brian's name and he gave them a thumbs up to begin an emotional end to the greatest period we've ever had.

May 7Relegated to the third tier for the first timeIn the last game of the season, we were relegated to the third tier on this day in 1945. We needed both a win for us and Leicester loss to escape the drop. While we got a 1-0 victory overy Bury, Leicester got a 1-1 draw away at Cardiff to put us in the third tier for the first time in our history.
May 13First of two games against Luton in 3 daysOn this day (May 13th) in 1988 we played Luton Town on a Friday evening. Nothing strange about that, except the rest of the league had already completed all of their games and we still had to play Luton twice. A fixture backlog had meant that both our previous games against the Hatters had been postponed and this was the first available date for us to meet. We drew 1-1 in Friday's game and had the same scoreline for the return fixture which was in 2 days time on Sunday afternoon. Between the games was the FA Cup Final, making this a rare occasion when league games were finished after the Cup. We also lost in the Semi-Final of the cup to Liverpool, meaning that a victory then would probably have left us playing both games after the Final!
May 19Stuart Pearce's first England capStuart Pearce made his England debut on May 19th 1987 in a 1-1 draw with Brazil at Wembley. He would go on to win 76 caps while at Forest (and 2 more after his move to West Ham) to make him our top capped England international.

[He was a] scruffy, unfit, uninterested waste of time, but something told me he was worth persevering with."
