It transpired that the Burnley goalkeeper Hillman attempted to bribe John McPherson to allow Burnley to win this match. This was their last match of the season and Burnley needed 2 points to secure safety, with Preston (3 points behind them) having a game in hand. Burnley lost 4-0 and Preston won their last two games of the season to relegate Burnley. Hillman was subsequently suspended for the whole of the following season.
