SUBSTITUTES
Substitutes were introduced into the game in 1965. Our first bench player was Bill Brindley, who stayed on the bench during the 2-2 draw away Newcastle United on August 21st 1965. Our first actual substitution was Barry McArthur coming on for Colin Addison a month later against Leeds.Since then there have been several changes to the rules on how and under what circumstances you can use them, and they're summarized here as follows:
