Notes:
Striker George Wilkins appears to have been bought in a pretty cool way. Back in the 1940s it wasn't rare to see us play back-to-back games over the Christmas period and 1947 was no exception. On Boxing Day of that year we lost 2-0 away at Doncaster Rovers and, knowing they were visiting us the next day, we went a bought a striker. Bradford Park Avenue agreed to give us George Wilkins (for 7,500 pounds) and he promptly scored on his debut in that return game the next day. Oh, and he scored in the next game. And the one after that. He only lasted one more season though and that was 1948-49 campaign that saw us relegated into the third division for the next two seasons but Wilkins had moved on to Leeds United by then. He was also the dad of England (and Chelsea, Man Utd and QPR) midfielder Ray Wilkins, and his son's 84 caps for England is pretty cool too.
