ON THIS DAY - MARCH 21
Brian Clough born On this day in 1935, Brian Howard Clough was born in Middlesborough, the sixth of nine children. After managerial spells at Hartlepool, Derby, Brighton and Leeds he joined Forest in 1975 and took us to the greatest heights.
It's getting close to the end of the season and, again, it's tight at the bottom. So, here's the final set of 10 games for the clubs around us. The lucky teams this year are West Ham, Leeds, Spurs and Burnley. (I'm assuming Wolves are a lost cause, despite two wins this week). Once results are in, this will be updated with the usual scheme of Green for a win, Blue for a draw and Red for a loss.
Now that we're back in Europe for the first time in 30 years, here's our Europa League opponents and our history against them. We've played friendlies against some of the teams, never played others and (of course) have played two of them in Europe before. Here's the skinny, in order of when we play them:
Group phase: Real Betis (Spain - Drew 2-2 Away): We've played Real Betis just once in a friendly, losing 1-0 back in 2018. Midtjylland (Denmark - Lost 2-3 at Home): We've never played the Danes in any game before this season, but they have played in Europe for the last 10 years! FC Porto (Portugal - Won 2-0 at Home): We've played Porto in three friendlies, winning one, drawing one and losing one. Sturm Graz (Austria - Drew 0-0 Away): The first of the teams we've faced in Europe before are Sturm Graz who we played in a two-legged UEFA Cup tie in 1984. We beat them 1-0 at home and then drew 1-1 away to advance to the Semi-Final. Malmo FF (Sweden - Won 3-0 at Home): And then, of course, we host Malmo this year. 1979 saw us beat them in the European Cup final to lift the first of two European titles, thanks to that goal from Trevor Francis. We then played them over 2-legs in the 1995-96 UEFA Cup, where a 2-1 loss away was countered by a 1-0 win at home and we advanced on the away-goals rule. (We were also 5-0 up in Jack Burkitt's testimonial that was abandoned due to fog in 1961 and lost 2-0 in a 1987 pre-season friendly) Utrecht (Netherlands - Won 2-1 Away): We've played Utrecht in two pre-season friendlies, drawing once and losing the other games. Braga (Portugal - Lost 0-1 Away): Braga have also only been played once in friendly, and we won it 3-0 at the start of the 2016 campaign. Ferencvaros (Hungary - Won 4-0 at Home): We've never played Ferencvaros before this season. Knockout: Fenerbache (Turkey - Won 3-0 Away, Lost 2-1 at Home): We've never played Fenerbache before this season. Midtjylland (Denmark): We already played the Danes in the Group Stage this year, losing 3-2 at home.
After a 2-1 home loss to Fenerbache in the Europa League, we still made the Round of 16 where we'll play Midtjylland again! (We lost 3-2 at home to them in the Group stage)
