The Record HoldersJohn Turner scored our first competitive goal in our first competitive game (after 13 years and over 100 friendlies). We beat Notts County 3-1 and his 5th minute opener makes him our first top goalscorer:
Arthur Smithscored the third goal in that opening game and a month later he netted his second to take over the title, before scoring another 7 to take his record to 9 goals.
Two years later
Sam Widdowson scored four in the FA Cup against Sheffield Heeley before moving the record up to 19
That stood for 10 years until
Alex Higgins took over and he extended the streak to 36 goals
Three years later, and
Tom McInnes takes the new record with his 37th goal and moves the target up to 59.
And that target was no problem for
Grenville Morris. In January 1903 he scored his 60th goal and, before he retired 9 years later, hit the net a massive 217 times. The closest anyone has come to beating that was
Nigel Clough who scored 131 times for us, but that means even he was 90 short of the record.
