EUROPEAN CUP PLAYERS (1979, 1980, 1981)

These are the 22 players who appeared in the European Cup games of 1979, 1980 and 1981. The format in the 80's was a single-elimination knockout over 2 legs, with each round having a random draw of opponents, without seeds.

Appearances
Three of the players (Peter Shilton, Garry Birtles and John Robertson) appeared in all 20 games, while Raimondo Ponte only appeared in one game, coming on as a sub in the first leg aginst CSKA Sofia.

Trevor Francis's debut was, of course, in the first final where he scored the only goal.

Opposition
Interestingly, our first ever game in Europe saw us drawn aginst the current two-time holders of the European Cup, Liverpool, who we beat 2-0 on aggregate.
Our final game was as two-time holders ourselves, when we also lost 2-0 on aggregate, to CSKA Sofia.
